If you have received any attachment in an email that preports to be a ZoneAlarm file, SAVE IT TO A FLOPPY (including the email) AND REMOVE IT FROM YOUR SYSTEM. This applies to any unknown/unwanted file. Report it to companies that produce virus scanning software (not ZoneLabs as they are not a virus scanning producer). Give as much detail as possible, but do NOT include the suspected file! The Email content will be empty but the properties will show some detail. This will be required. Copy it and paste inside your reporting email. The file we received was called 'SAMPLE.EXE and renamed by ZoneAlarm to SAMPLE.Zl9'. The code shows copyright to 'VIRUS 2001' and was traced to spain. It will not destroy any files but 'bombard' USA government sites and mail servers in general, thus bring them to a standstill. Will effect other Mail Servers running Microsoft software, not just the USA. Beware of individuals that may alter the original code making it more destructive. DELETE IT STRAIGHT AWAY !!!! The worm message reads: 'Hello - Welcome to the worm.com.....' This worm has been around for quite some weeks and was reported last seen active a couple of weeks ago. Despite that, we have not heard of any updates to protection software. HOMEPAGE (spawned from the I Love You' worm attachment.) It's said to be worse than the 'I Love You' worm. The subject of the E-mail is 'Homepage' with the message 'Hi! You've got to see this page! It's really cool;O)'. The attachment is Visual Basic format VBS/VBSWGZ. The attachment is names HOMEPAGE.HTML. It's NOT HTML format. Once again, and I have said it enough times, NEVER open attachments. Just delete the offending E-mail and its contents. VBS/SST (Anna Kournikova) attachments. It has some of the same characteristics of the 'I LOVE YOU' worm. DO NOT examine her photographs or they may activate a nasty 'worm' on your system. Just delete the e-mail completely. EMANUEL/NAVIDAD the E-mail virus has struck again. This time it has also managed to bypass a 'News' server checks, infecting outgoing news mail. Another version Navidad 8, self-executes and more problems. EVEYONE MUST stop viewing and unzipping attachments from unknown sources! So, Check everything. Get Virus scanners and FireWall. It's a step in the right direction. It's about time that SERVERS scan ALL emails/files, irrespective, before they are delivered. No good refusing to take responsibility for 'management' of your systems. Servers/Hosts must be made to scan and stop 'stripped' and infected packets. That is as simple as that ! It is costing billions in revenue and still no one wants to do anything about it! Visual Basic Scripts. Watch out for attachments that have a name then .TXT.VBS etc. Most people just see the .TXT and try to view it. That's another thing wrong with Windows operating system. It allows things with more than one 'dot' to operate as a normal file. Not like the 'good old days' of pure DOS. Still, we move on. HYBRIS 'snow white', KAK and others. We were sent through our private e-mail address, two totally stripped emails containing different renamed files containing 'Hybris' (a worm, file streamer). They were sent via Saudi Arabia and we are actively tracking it down. Irrespective of not being affected by this attempted 'abuse', it was thought necessary to pass this information on to our visitors, so that you can be made aware of the facts. DO NOT ACCEPT ANY STRIPPED EMAILS, JUST DELETE THEM. DO NOT ACCEPT ATTACHMENTS UNLESS YOU KNOW THE INDIVIDUAL WELL AND EXPECT THE CONTENT AS REQUESTED! DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO UPLOAD ANYTHING ONTO YOUR COMPUTER SYSTEM, PERIOD! There are always individuals who will attempt to 'trash' your system, be it for 'laughs' or to test 'back door' software, so act now and be safe. Use a good quality 'SPAM' killer and set it up to delete stripped mails on the out set. If the contents was from someone you know, they will contact you if they have not heard from you. Use a couple of good Virus scanners and get 'Fire Wall' protection. Some protection is better than none. Nothing is 100%, so be aware of what's going on. 'I LOVE YOU' and yet another called 'South Park' in German and there has been more since these. The 'I love you' E-mail worm attachment has caused severe problems across the world. Networks have crashed due to the mass of 'spamming' that this thing does. It is estimated that about one third of companies in the UK have been infected. 'South Park' packs the same punch. The 'I Love You' and 'South Park' worms are attachments to your E-mail and MUST NOT BE OPENED. Once again, you are advised to DELETE any E-mail with attachments from people you do not know. It is NOT worth the hassle. These worms, when opened, will not only spend 5 minutes attaching itself to all your e-mail addresses, picture files and so on, it will also 'SPAM' itself across ALL Networks. They also has the ability to extract passwords, account numbers and other details and E-mail them to a specific address. If you want to be safe, then never accept attachments from anyone unless you have specifically requested them from friends and clients. If you are not sure about anything.....DELETE IT. If it is Bona-Fide, they will contact you in due course to find out what's going on. If you you accept attachments, then just save them to a directory or 'Desktop' and scan them. Remember this is NOT a solution for NEW Viruses. You MUST always keep your virus scanning software 'Up-to-date'. If you do not have one, get the trial versions. At least, while you are evaluating them, you have some protection. Please remember to register any software you use. 'Melissa' caused quite a few problems for larger corporates. E-MAIL worm hits thousands. Microsoft is also hit. The ExploreZip virus combines Melissa's spread with CIH's payload. How it works. If you E-mail an infected desktop, you will receive a response that contains the virus payload. The message header will appear the same but the text inside will be changed and you will see an attached file. The Message. "Hi (Recipient Name)! I received your e-mail and I shall send you a reply ASAP. Till then, take a look at the attached zipped docs. Bye" Reactions. Normally, you would 'open' and unzip, but in this case you..... MUST NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT...DELETE IT COMPLETELY !!!
Fire Walls. They are not 100% safe, but have one running on your systems. Some protection is better than none. Zone Alarm works well. There are ways to circumvent protection. When you allow software through the 'Fire Wall', make sure that nothing else of the same name is present on your system. If there is and you do not know what it does, delete it using the correct procedure. Have only ONE Browsor, Emailer and so on, on your system. Use lesser known products. Known ones tend to be attacked more often. In doing this, some nasty files can be caught and stopped before they do harm. Companies, Networks and Business are failing to inform their employees and customers about these types of things. By the way this virus has hit so many people, it would seem that this would be the case. Company employees are STILL opening attachments despite the media coverage and internal warnings! The question 'WHY?' must be asked. Computer departments must make sure that everyone, no matter who, are made fully aware of the potential threat. It is in everyone's interest that 'memos' are distributed regularly. It is important to remember that customers and their personal data will be infected and distributed to unknown sources when E-mail, invoices and other documents are distributed. There will always be the threat of 'Crackers' trying to extract information and creating some serious problems, so be prepared, be active ! So far, this reporter has only been informed by ONE ISP that he belongs to, about this or any other virus! It's time everyone WOKE UP and take NOTE. ISPs and Web Hosting sites are responsible for their customers just as much as anyone else. Customers are advised to get their ISPs, Web Hosting, Computer Departments and Networks 'On-The-Ball'. In another words, 'COMPLAIN'. Get them to do what you are paying them for! It is in everyone's interest to keep each other up-to-date and 'informed' !
